Sharp to Increase Thin-film Si Solar Cell Production
Saturday, December 1st, 2007
Sharp has plans to go sharper, the plan is to boost thin-film Si (silicon) solar cell output at its Katsuragi Plant. Investing approximately ¥22 billion the idea is to increase the present output that stands at15MW to 160MW. Sharp initiated volume production of tandem thin-film solar cells with a tandem-junction structure (amorphous Si and microcrystalline Si) in September 2005. Then the company started mass-production of “triple type” thin-film solar cells with a triple-junction structure, in which the number of amorphous layers is increased to two, in the fall of 2007. Triple type solar cells feature high module conversion efficiencies of about 10%, said Sharp.
