Pioneer shoe – Pioneers in producing electricity on the move

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

Chen Feijun and Zhao Bin have invented a shoe called Pioneer that converts kinetic energy of walking into electrical energy, which powers a headlight at the front of the shoe. This shoe has a battery within itself which once charged can be successfully used to power a headlight for twelve hours (the maximum scope of the LED headlight is 1.5m to the front). This shoe has all the safety gears to keep the batter, light and your feet intact. Nightriders, this is what the doctor has ordered for you! So why wait to see yourself lying in some stinky drain when technology has a great deal to offer and that too with a touch of a button.

Masdar City - World’s greenest city!

Masdar City - World's greenest city

Abu Dhabi and the World Wildlife Fund has planned to launch their planned ‘Masdar City’, which will be home to 50,000 people, and which they hope will be the world greenest city: zero-carbon, zero-car, zero-waste. Sewage will be treated and used for irrigation. Water will come from a solar-powered desalination plant. Photovoltaic cells will also provide electricity for the city. This is by-far the greenest news I’ve come across as it aims to meet or exceed a set of stringent sustainability goals established under the ‘One Planet Living’. Masdar City is set to question conventional patterns of urban development, and set new benchmarks for sustainability and environmentally friendly designs.

Statue of liberty solar light - Symbolizing the power of alternative energy in saving our planet

Statue of Liberty - solar light

America’s most enduring symbol of freedom can now move from Ellis Island to your lawns and walkways. It’s a monument/treasure that all Americans are proud off and would like to possess in some form or the other. This Statue of liberty solar light (standing four feet tall) is an ultimate replacement for your traditional outdoor lights (that is just a metal post with a light on top). It holds a solar-powered torch that casts light on lawns and walkways and you won’t have to bury an electrical wire to power it. The lady Statue of Liberty will now also symbolize the power of alternative energy in saving our planet from global warming hence can dub it as ‘Statue of Green Earth’.

Toyota’s FCHV are now on-par with gasoline vehicles

Toyota FCHV

To perk up the cruising range of FCHV per charge to 500km, which is on par with that of the gasoline vehicles, Toyota Motor Corp held a lecture titled ‘Development of Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle-Cruising Range’ at EVS23. The company focused on enhancing the fuel tank pressure and improving its fuel efficiency. The pressure in the fuel tank was increased from 35 to 70MPa so that the tank can store about 6kg of fuel, which is 1.9 times that in the existing tank.

Pedal to power computers

The power that each one of us has inside us, we are so ignorant about it. Scientists have been going bonkers looking for alternatives to back up our energy need. But they in a way underestimated the human power itself. The students at MIT though have come up with a simple yet inspiring solution- Pedal Power.
A feast for the eyes and brains, 10 students of the MIT cycling team gathered in red, white and black uniforms for an enthralling display of the power of the human muscle. The lobby of the MIT’s Stata center became witness to human powered computing.

As the members pedalled their bikes, they powered a few super computers which ran an application that further stimulated fusion reaction. The direct current produced by pedalling the cycles (the cycles were connected to a generator, which in turn was connected to a converter) got transformed into alternating current through the converter.
